The anticipation level for the 2009 Grammys was insane. The performances were always going to be legendary, a scandal was guaranteed (and shit, didn’t we get one?) and the world’s premier musicians were all assembled under one roof.

The most exciting piece of news, however, broke late… M.I.A. would be performing, on the bloody due date of her unborn child! It was huge news, and allowed for a one off performance of ‘Swagga Like Us’, an event we’ve been waiting for since T.I’s excellent ‘Paper Planes’ leaked last year.

M.I.A. is far more important to our generation than she realises. Her music is incredibly diverse and distinct, and whilst she has allegedly bowed out from the industry, most believe she has much more to give.

Maya has always been comfortable in her own skin, as shown by her polka dot dress at the Grammys. When I say polka, its important to consider that a large majority of the dress wasn’t even there (mesh), and M.I.A. managed to pull of the impossible feat of looking cool whilst aping Mr. Blobby. Incredible.

Her real power comes in being a jack of all trades. Take a look at her 2009 thus far… It’s already been full of recoginition and good fortune. First and foremost, her child. Fortunately, her water didn’t break on stage (although that would have made one of the legendary TV moments) and the baby has not been delivered yet. Secondly, Oscar recognition for her work on the soundtrack for Slumdog Millionaire (a truly excellent film) with A.R. Rahman (see earlier post for O… Saya, the opening track). Two Grammy nominations were also forthcoming… the best part of this all is that M.I.A. doesn’t even look like she is trying. Would anyone bet against another huge year for Maya Arulpragasam?

   MIA is the best!!!… she’s a great unique artist… the majority of people who don’t like her are jealous sinhalese people who hate discriminate against tamils… thats what they do, just hate.. but M.I.A. is one of a kind…. representing the Tamils…
