The Maccabees- No Kind Words (Link 2)

Welcome back, welcome back, The Maccabees. Some of our readers over the Atlantic might not be familiar with the breathlessly romantic charms of their debut album “Colour It In”, but here in the UK it was something of a sleeper hit, particularly off the back of their stellar live performances. However, whilst The Maccabees’ nostalgia and effortless evocation of young love on “Precious Time” and “Latchmere” might mean that they’ll prop up many a mixtape in their time, it’s also led critics to label them twee, and their debut album got away with being so one-paced only because the songs were mint. Ch-ch-change has to come or they will drown in their own nostalgia.

This latest song – which doesn’t appear to be a single, just an album track – suggests a band testing the limits of their old sound and their powers.

No Kind Words swaggers in on a limber, strutting beat some distance from the epileptic jitter of their early cuts, and lead singer Orlando’s voice is deeper than his usual pained quiver: the lyrics, intoning about a “dear friend of mine/testing his body/testing waters, with another’s daughter” suggest that all might not be entirely warm and fuzzy in band camp. When they drop into the fast-paced jerk so familiar to old fans, you feel like they’ve earned it, and it offers a release at the end of this tense and compelling return to the spotlight. Sooooo, an intriguing taster of new album “Wall of Arms”, which will hopefully see the development of a very special band. Did someone whisper ‘band you can believe in’? Just me then……
