Black Eyed Peas- Boom Boom Pow (Link 2)
UPDATE: Revised opinion. Beware, we have a serious grower here. ‘Boom Boom Pow’ is a really interesting song, but I still stand by the fact that 27 million records is not a figure relative to the bands talent.
Black Eyed Peas have always been less hit, more miss. It’s probably best to start our analysis by considering the parts of this group, and how they have sold an incredible 27 million records.
Will.i.am is the driving force behind the music. His production skills are far more noteworthy than his ‘rapping’ (see the solo album for proof), but its easy to see he has masterminded most of their success. Their albums are musically diverse, flowing from ‘Where Is The Love’ style ballads to the sexually suggestive bass heavy ‘My Humps’.
Fergie is the reason they aren’t some washed up hip hop group. The combination of her voice and appearance (*ahem*) really do set them apart. It’s important to note they only became popular after ‘Elephunk’, the first album on which Fergie sang. She has also launched a solid solo career off the back of BEP’s.
apl.de.ap and Taboo are tag-alongs, and they know it. Taboo probably takes the consolation prize for his role in the 2009 Street Fighter movie as Vega.
So how do 4 people, 2 of which aren’t especially original or exceptional, sell 27 million records? Well, lets take a look at their latest single for some clues.
‘Boom Boom Pow’ is just fun. It’s derivative (and uses Auto-Tune… sigh), it isn’t ‘fresh’ (the beats are a few years old) and it isn’t going to change the way people record music. It’s just a fast, daring piece of music, jumping between BPM’s and directions, and will demand your attention. Black Eyed Peas fifth album, ‘The END’ (The Energy Never Dies) is out June 9th. Chart success beckons.
Challenge: Can you figure out why Black Eyed Peas have sold so many records? We would love to know.
“Where Is The Love”
“Let’s Get Retarded”
“Hey Mama”
+++++
“Don’t Funk With My Heart”
“Don’t Lie”
“MY HUMPS”
and other small singles — but these six alone have definitely catapulted the BEPs into super-popstardom.
Those songs are good… just not 27 million good.
Surprisingly enough, they actually reflect a growing trend in music. They embody high energy dance music, which is getting more and more popular every year. Even the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are putting out a “dance” album…
BEPs songs may not be the greatest, but they are one of the few mainstream groups that consistently caters to the hungry fans of this re-emerging genre.
I was never attacking the music really… more the slightly interesting band make-up. I find Will.i.am and Fergie carry the band, leaving the other guys to be filler.
And yes, you are right about their catering to the trend.
