Kanye West- Half Price (Link 2)
‘Half Price’ took me back to those days. You know, the ones where rappers actually rapped? I’m going to commit net-suicide here, but ‘808’s & Heartbreak’ was nigh on perfect. I was shocked how perfectly placed each beep, each flipped note, each silence was. Intriguingly, the only thing lacking were the verses. They were simply sub par.
I do, however, long for the end of this era, even though it has produced some great music (see the lastest, ‘Flight School’). The sooner Lil’ Wayne’s rock album is released (and flops) the better. Hopefully that will be the end of these blends. For whilst the tests of autotune, singing and the endless featuring artists have been interesting, we don’t believe they have improved rap and hip hop music in the long term. It will be good to see how things progress, but hopefully the music goes grassroots, and the artists are able to innovate again. Here’s to a retro 2009.
Where will rap and hip hop go next? If you’re psychic, leave a comment.
this is one of my favorite kanye verses
