Burial & Four Tet- Moth (Link 2)
There came a point in 2008 when the hype behind Burial’s identity became much bigger than the music he produced. Just as with Banksy, anonymity doesn’t sit well with the British public, and the tabloids do their best to either find out or make things difficult for individuals who choose to keep their work and personal life separate.
A nomination for the Nationwide Mercury Prize was a fitting reward for two fantastic albums. Anonymously working as a dubstep producer in South London, William Bevan had turned out a self-titled debut and followed up with ‘Untrue’, both of which had generated serious interest in the industry. He helped make dubstep mainstream for a time.
At one time, according to Bevan, “only five people know I make tunes”. His admission that “I’m a lowkey person and I just want to make some tunes, nothing else” joined with a picture and an eventual release of his identity was one of the best things that could have happened to him as an artist. Ultimately, the potential for collaboration is limited by an anonymous streak, and now that the secret is out, Burial is free to do as he wishes. Obviously, the pressure is greater, but you only have to look at his new material to see that the quality of the music is a given. If, that is, dubstep is ‘your thing’.
I’m partial to his music just because of the pure emotion the man is able to produce from percussion. I also liked the mystique surrounding him- just as Daft Punk have chosen to hide behind robot suits for most of their popular career, Bevan chose anonymity, and it provides a certain appeal. He, however, had no mask, and live performances proved impossible. I hope the reveal of his identity is the end of this.
Either way, his new collaboration with Four Tet is fantastic, although I’m not entirely sure its a direct mix of their music. To most people, it’s clear that ‘Moth’ has Burial’s watermark, and ‘Wolf Cub’ is Four Tet’s baby. Perhaps they just aided the process by trading recording notes? Who knows… their identities might now be known, but the work that goes into the music is still a mystery.
“Moth/Wolf Cub” is a 12″ release out on May 4th. Pre-order sales have sold out, but more copies may be available soon.
The link is dead.
My head is exploding ahhhhhh, this is so cool!
Hey FR6- the zShare link is still working. And thanks for commenting Anthony, hows the running of Hype Machine going?! You guys must be crazy busy…
Thnx so much for this.Stunning.I think its burial’s work with some four tet advice. And since its a 4/4 beat I think it will be in the chart of every deep house dj. Burial once again proves that he is not human
thnx for all the music.
Haha, no problem. He seems like an really decent guy, I’m a bit sorry that he was forced out of anonymity to be honest, it added something to his image.
However, the music is still fantastic, and I’m just glad I could share it with you guys. Lets not forget Four Tet are bloody great too!
The tabloids on the Burial hunt? Not really. Would have liked to hear a little more about the music.
Hi Colin, an interesting point. I would love to write about the music more, but the sounds Burial generates are really difficult to put down on paper.
As per the tabloid hunt, yes, there are a number of people interested in finding out who the man was behind the music. I’ve read articles in The Independent, The Guardian and The Daily Mail, amongst others…
Both links now down? Would really appreciate a fresh link, this is sick! was skeptical when i heard they were doing a track together, but this is another masterpiece!
