Asher Roth- As I Em (ft. Chester French) (Link 2)
I’ve deliberately kept away from Asher Roth- in my opinion, he’s so-so, nowhere near as aggressive or close to the knuckle as Eminem. I do respect ‘As I Em’, though, and I think there is far, far more to hear from this guy- he is obviously more comfortable tackling songs about periphery (like ‘I Love College’) than tackling issues (see ‘Mosh’). Since the release of his debut album- ‘Asleep In The Bread Aisle’- there has been a noticeable improvement in his stage-craft (you only have to look at tonight’s performance on Jools Holland for proof).
It’s great to see that the fame isn’t going to his head- after all, he was able to cut loose in the Radio 1 Live Lounge last week, with hilarious results. It’s already one of my favourite performances in their studio, starting off slow and then really kicking off:
‘BBC wont let me say ‘ ‘… Please just let me say ‘ ‘… Still, I need my visa so you know I take it easy on ya!’
This has it all- context sensitive raps (’divas in Movida when I be in London tawwnnn’), crazy falsetto, call and repsonse, scratching and even a drum solo… I’m finding it really hard not to like the guy. Take a look for yourself:
